Gianfranco Alessandria is a small family-owned winery located just outside of Monforte d'Alba and boasts one of the most picturesque views of the Alps. Gianfranco, with the help of his two daughters, Vittoria and Marta, continues the tradition begun two generations ago, when his grandfather became a grape grower. Today they work with 7 hectares of vineyards divided between Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto, in east-facing San Giovanni, which lies close to some of Monforte's best-known crus, such as Bussia. Plump and velvety with a fresh core of black cherry, red plum and red liquorice. A fresh, zingy red.
Robin says "Barbera has long been one of the staple wines of Piedmont. Gianfranco produces two styles - one which is more on the fruit and one which is aged in oak barrels and a bit more serious and ageworthy. This is the fresher, fruiter version which offers fresh acidity, a succulent mix of black and red fruits and innate spice."
