Oxer Bastegieta is a rockstar and we are definitely amongst his ‘groupies’. Oxer always wanted to make wines in Rioja Alavesa, the Basque area of Rioja, and in 2005 he took the plunge and moved to the area. In 2009 he made his first wine with grapes from old vineyards which had been purchased from growers in the area. Convinced of the singularity of these old vines in the region, Oxer began buying some of these old vineyards to create unique wines with loads of depth and soul. Iraun, meaning ‘to endure’ in Euskera (Basque language) is a nod to the producer’s homeland. This Viura-dominant wine has concentrated aromas of yellow peach, honeydew, lemon and butter. This has incredible texture and mouthfeel assisted by 12 months in French oak. Outstanding!
Robin says "A truly distinctive producer, Oxer makes wines in the heart of Spain's Basque Country, specialising in Rioja. For a wine that is only 12.5%, this white Rioja packs an incredible amount of punch and personality. Layered, broad and unique with a balance of fruit and earth notes. This is definitely a food wine and could easily accompany savoury white meat dishes without being overshadowed. A wine to discover!"
