Oxer Bastegieta is a rockstar and we are definitely amongst his ‘groupies’. Oxer always wanted to make wines in Rioja Alavesa, the Basque area of Rioja, and in 2005 he took the plunge and moved to the area. In 2009 he made his first wine with grapes from old vineyards which had been purchased from growers in the area. Convinced of the singularity of these old vines in the region, Oxer began buying some of these old vineyards to create unique wines with loads of depth and soul. Kalamity (a name given that indirectly relates to Oxer’s love of Shakespeare) shows an array of aromas from dark berries to animal notes to violets and spice. On the palate, the flavours are incredibly bold and take you to a place you never knew existed. A wine with enormous length and minerality. Only 1,200 bottles made.
Robin says "Oxer makes truly distinctive wines in the heart of the Basque Country. Kalamity is a bit of a "cult" Rioja, combining only the best fruit from both Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa from truly old vines that are around 100-120 years in age. His goal is to really take the best from both of Rioja's top sub-regions and combine it into one soulful experience. An impressive wine that will age beautifully."
