Oxer Bastegieta is a rockstar and we are definitely amongst his ‘groupies’. Oxer always wanted to make wines in Rioja Alavesa, the Basque area of Rioja, and in 2005 he took the plunge and moved to the area. In 2009 he made his first wine with grapes from old vineyards which had been purchased from growers in the area. Convinced of the singularity of these old vines in the region, Oxer began buying some of these old vineyards to create unique wines with loads of depth and soul. Suzzane refers to Leonard Cohen´s song Suzanne and is an ode to women, as elegance is key in this wine. Its velvety texture is balanced by juicy acidity and softly gripping tannins. Aromas of blackberry, damson plums and black cherry fill the nose whilst sweet spices such as cinnamon and star anise and tobacco fill the palate. A true seductress!
Robin says "A truly distinctive producer, Oxer makes wines in the heart of Spain's Basque Country, specialising in Rioja. Whilst most Rioja is Tempranillo-based, it can also be based on other varieties. In this case, it is Garnacha (or Grenache). Suzzane harnesses all the spicy expressiveness of the grape whilst maintaining a balanced elegance."
