Scarzello is a family run producer located in the heart of the village of Barolo. This diminutive, traditional, Barolo producer owns a mere five hectares, nearly half of which are in Sarmassa, one of the region’s top crus. Federico Scarzello and wife Federica (how meant to be was that!) run the estate and have done since 2001. This single-vineyard Barolo is released when the Scarzellos feel it is ready to drink, so no more patience is required! Another level up in layers from their delicious main Barolo, this Sarmassa opens up with notes truffle, sweet dried fruits and herbs, laced with spice. Just beautiful and sumptuous.
Robin says "A more traditional producer, Scarzello ages its wine in larger oak casks so as not to dominate the purity of the Nebbiolo fruit with oak flavours. They also release their wines when they feel they are ready to drink. This is an older concept but not many producers have continued to do it, but we are delighted they do! The 2012 Sarmassa has lots of savoury appeal in an ample velvety palate."
